Bio Based Panel: a light and sustainable solution

How can we reduce the weight of different vehicles?

Amorim Cork Composites has launched Bio Based Panel, an innovative cork solution to meet the constant challenges imposed by the industry.

Manufacturers are striving to reduce the weight of different vehicles - whether cars, trains or caravans – since this will deliver better fuel efficiency and consequently lower emissions.

Bio Based Panel is made of cork, a 100% natural material, with a layer of flax fiber on each side, to give it greater strength. It has been developed to be used as a core in multi-layer panels, reducing the weight of these panels by up to 10 per cent (when compared to traditional plywood panels with the same type of construction) without undermining its performance.

Cork, which is the main constituent of the Bio Based Panel, has unique characteristics that make it ideal for the production of lightweight materials, since it is lightweight, resistant to fire and high temperatures, offers thermal and acoustic insulation, and is highly resistant to wear and tear. It is also a renewable raw material, that is harvested without damaging the tree, and which contributes to environmental sustainability.

Bio Based Panel can be used in different parts of vehicles with the aim of reducing weight, while also improving acoustic and thermal comfort and providing the rigidity and strength needed to ensure occupant safety. Possible applications include interior panels, floors, doors and other structural elements.
