Cork is 100% natural, reusable and recyclable, making it one of the world’s most versatile materials from an environmental, social or economic perspective. Studies show that for every ton of cork produced, cork oak forests sequester up to 73 tons of CO2.(1)

Why choose a sealing solution with cork?

Although it is a natural raw material, cork has a unique set of technical characteristics that are ideal for various industrial applications. Impermeability to liquids and gases, elasticity and compressibility, thermal and acoustic insulation and resistance to friction, are some of the characteristics that makes cork such a versatile and unique material. Amorim Tech Seal’s cork composite solutions have been specifically designed and tested for sealing gas systems, heavy machinery, automotive parts, among other applications.

Incorporating cork in the material endows the solution with excellent conformability and reduced lateral expansion, which are essential characteristics for a good sealing material, since it permits larger contact areas and higher compression rates, ensuring an effective sealing barrier against possible surface imperfections and spillages. In addition to endowing the material with excellent technical characteristics, cork contributes to the development of a more sustainable product, since its environmental advantages are integrated into the product.

The case of the TS1521

For the Amorim Tech Seal range of solutions, considering TS1521 - a sealant widely used in the automotive sector - or TS5500 - used to seal gas systems - the amount of cork present in just one sheet, measuring 914x914mm (36x36in) and 1.5mm (0.06in) in thickness, can sequester up to 19kg (42lbs) of CO2(2). This is just one small example of how investing in more sustainable materials can have a huge impact on the end applications.
