The initiative got the company and researchers to work side by side, making clear both parties' willingness to collaborate on projects that promote cork as a raw material.

Amorim Cork Composites (ACC) is giving increasing importance to its proximity to higher education institutions. Proof of this is the company’s total openness to the invitations sent by universities around the world that promote the exchange of knowledge and the search for new solutions involving cork.

In this area, Amorim Cork Composites recently hosted an encounter organized by the University of Porto (U.Porto), A2B, receiving at its facilities more than 40 members of the scientific community, challenging their creative capacity through several exercises.

During the session, those present had the opportunity to learn more about the characteristics of cork, and the way in which it is integrated into a range of solutions. This universe of applications in areas such as construction, furniture, footwear, or the transport industry demonstrates the personality of this raw material and awakens the researchers’ critical and innovative spirit.

With the objective of powering this brainstorming of ideas, the initiative considered a challenge that would put the creativity and the technical knowledge of those present to the test. Starting with five priority market segments for the company – construction materials (reaction to smoke, to fire, acoustic performance, vibration control); construction of floors (thermal and acoustic insulation, use of recyclable material); panels and composites; furniture (resistance to ultraviolet radiation to prevent color degradation, resistance to water and to fire) and footwear (biocidal properties and fragrances) – those invited suggested possible means of application of the products, thus opening the door to future joint projects.

Each business area was presented by representatives of Amorim Cork Composites, which allowed for the clarification of all doubts and questions raised by the participants.

For Nuno Terrível, innovation director of ACC, “this overture to universities is absolutely critical, principally to the University of Porto, taking into account the historical relationship we have. ACC has a strategy for networked development and we want to continue to open this strategy to you. We want you to think about cork more and more”, said the director during the welcome session.
