Amorim Cork Composites is a partner in the development of an ecological solution to ensure the healthy balance of surface waters.

Amorim Cork Composites and Bluemater have established a partnership to develop a cork floating island – which is natural, resilient and visually appealing.

This unique product is a modular cork platform that is specifically designed for biological treatment of wastewater, since the roots of the plants help purify the water, functioning as an ecosystem by allowing the recovery of habitats in degraded or polluted areas, recovery of river banks, lakes and reservoirs, creation of habitats in urban gardens, lakes and biological pools, and rehabilitation and maintenance of protected ecosystems.

They can also be applied to integrated production systems of water in plants for consumption, such as aquaculture and hydroponics, and in ETAR sewage treatment systems, replacing plants that are traditionally planted at the bottom of tanks - thereby avoiding well-known blockage problems and ensuring maintenance of a healthy and efficient treatment system.

  • This solution delivers benefits such as low density and good buoyancy, low maintenance costs, durability, sustainable water treatment, and modular design with easy connection between modules.

It’s a cork agglomerate with a density of 0.2, which can support up to 16 kg of plants per square meter. Each module is 100 cm wide by 50 cm high and has a thickness of 6 cm.

The cork floating islands, which are patent pending, will soon be applied in several projects.
